Beginning in the 1880s, a group of revolutionary artists who called themselves Neo-Impressionists developed a technique of applying paint in dots of complementary colours. These artists, among them Maximilien Luce, Camille Pissarro and Paul Signac, believed that their harmonious application of paint was capable of producing art so beautiful that it would uplift the minds of their viewers and lead to a state of social and moral harmony.
